Save
money when you recycle cartridges
We get questions about how to recycle ink
cartridges. In big corporations recyclers usually go around and
collect hazardous waste, like batteries, sprays, and aerosol cans,
and they also collect used office paper and used office cartridges
for recycling. However, home office workers do not have the time
or the resources to do all of that. Does it make a difference?
Yes. Don’t ever throw cartridges in the garbage if possible.
Recycle them instead. One of the best ways to keep commodity resources
in the system is to save up your cartridges, for example five or
ten, and then find a local charity that collects cartridges and
send them there. Usually, people who recycle cartridges will actually
come and collect them from you making this a win-win situation.
Non-profits or charitable organizations will in turn sell the cartridges
to a refilling store or cartridge broker and will be paid for them.
However if the cartridges were refilled before they are often worthless
for high quality refilling purposes, and will be recycled into lawn
furniture or some other plastics intensive manufacturing product.
Ink cartridges like Epson and some Canons cannot not be refilled
for economic reasons. Sometimes the cartridges are so cheap in the
first place that it is not economical to refill them. The ones that
are best suited to refilling have built in print heads, like HP
cartridges.
So, don’t throw away your old cartridges. At best they will
benefit a non-profit organization by helping to raise funding. At
worst they will be reused as commodities for the plastics industry.
