Closet Shelving for Home Office Storage
When your business
revolves around your home office, storage space is often at a
premium. Closet shelving can be a simple and effective solution.
Many home offices are located in a spare bedroom, where closets tend
to have ample room. The closet can quickly fill up with office
supplies and paperwork. Adding some shelving is a great way to use
more of that closet space.
In my office at home,
I have one closet that is very long, but not very deep. This is
actually an ideal situation because I can take just one step in and
reach just about anything I need. Once I added a long stretch of
shelving, I effectively doubled my available storage space.
If you decide to add
some shelves in your office closet, I recommend they be at least 8
inches wide. I keep a spare printer, an old fax machine, and lots
of printer/copier paper on the shelving, and I’ve found that the
wider planks are better able to hold bigger items like those.
Of course, you’ll
want to be sure that the shelving is anchored securely and can
handle a lot of weight. I used anchor screws, which come with metal
or hard plastic shells that expand as you screw them in. I used
them in conjunction with thick metal L-brackets to hold up the
shelves. I recommend using more brackets than you think you need.
Overkill is better than having the shelving come crashing down one
day!
If closet shelves are not feasible in your home office, you can pick
up a barebones metal or molded plastic portable shelving unit from
most office supply stores. They aren’t expensive and will probably
suit your needs just fine. The only downside is the extra space
they take up in your office. A closet shelf was a better choice in
my situation, but may not be for yours.
