Chair Mats - Don't Overlook Them
in Your Home Office
Chair mats make
it easier for sliding chairs to freely move on carpeted surfaces.
You’ve probably seen the clear plastic mats that have points on one
side to secure the mat down into the carpet. They are smooth on the
top to let a rolling chair move from place to place. What you might
not know is that chair mats are good even for chairs that don’t move.
They will protect your carpet from those indentations caused by your
chair.
Chair mats also
protect your floor from mess. If you eat or drink at your desk, the
mat will probably catch the spill and it’s a lot easier to clean than
carpet. It also keeps the carpet underneath free of dust, dirt, and
grime that the rest of the carpet has to endure. It’s a good idea to
switch the position of your mat from time to time to keep the carpet
more evenly worn.
You can find
chair mats in different thicknesses. If you have a hard surface that
you just want to protect, you can get a thinner mat. The prongs
aren’t deep like thicker carpet mats. They simply sit on top of your
floor to keep it from being scraped or scratched by your chair. Plush
carpets need a thicker mat with deeper prongs than Berber carpet.
You will probably
have to replace chair mats every 2-3 years, as your chair will
eventually wear down the plastic. Thicker mats usually don’t have to
be replaced as often, but are more expensive to purchase.
