What kind of
filing cabinet is right for your home office?
When it comes
to picking a filing cabinet, many people who work from home just
choose anything they can find at the local office furniture or
supplies store that isn’t too expensive. Sound familiar? While this
really isn’t an issue for some home offices, in some cases you might
be creating more work for yourself when you don’t take the time to get
the right file cabinet.
Paperwork tends
to accumulate at a faster and faster rate in many offices, especially
when your business hits its stride and becomes more successful. That’s
about the time you start to rely on filing cabinets to keep things
from getting completely unorganized. This innocuous piece of furniture
suddenly becomes vitally important.
So how do you
go about deciding what kind of filing cabinet you need in your
particular situation? First, sit down and honestly assess how much
paperwork filing you currently have to do every month in your office. It’s
a good idea to get some input from your accountant as well, to
determine what to expect as your business grows and to find out how
long you’re required to keep certain tax documents filed away.
Next, determine
how much space your office has for a filing cabinet. Don’t forget to include
the anticipated extra room you’ll need as you expand. You may decide
that one large cabinet is a better idea right now, even if you
don’t currently need all that filing space. Or, you might decide that
smaller, mobile file cabinets are a better option. These are often a
better choice if you anticipate filing paperwork from different locations in your
office.
