What is a barrister bookcase
and could your office use one?
A barrister bookcase is the term for a
bookcase with front doors covering each shelf unit. Barrister is an
English term for what we in America would call an attorney or lawyer.
Since they obviously use a lot of books in that profession, barrister
bookcases were originally designed to protect the legal books, but
still give visual access. Most of this type of bookcase has glass
doors framed in wood.
So
is this kind of bookcase a good option in your home office? Maybe. If you
run a business that requires a lot of manuals or documentation, or one
in which you need to use reference materials a lot, then a barrister
style bookcase is probably a smart addition.
Barrister bookcases tend to be more expensive
than a standard bookcase that lacks the front doors. If you’re just
starting out in business, you might want to opt for the cheaper
bookcase style and use the extra money for more pressing office furniture
needs.
Should you decide that you do want a
barrister bookcase, shop around. Most bigger furniture stores (offline
and online) offer a variety of them, and prices can vary quite a bit.
So do the legwork and narrow down your choices first. You’ll end up
with a bookcase any home office owner would be proud to display, and
you won’t break the bank to get it.
